Carl Andre: Things In Their Elements Overview

Carl Andre (born 1935), the American minimalist artist, is perhaps best known for his grid-based floor sculptures but also for large, outdoor public artworks and small sculptures, poetry and installations. Alistair Rider here shows that it is the materials that he uses to make his works that inspire him - from his controversial bricks to all sorts of metals, found wood, even hay bales, Andre is fascinated by what materials make up the world and presents them for contemplation. Andre's early wood sculptures show the influence of Brancusi, who he had met through their mutual friend Hollis Frampton when a student in the early 1950s. Then towards the end of that decade he shared a studio with Frank Stella and their conversations led to rapid development in his work, when he began using a radial saw to shape his sculptures. Between 1960-4 Andre worked as freight brakeman and conductor in New Jersey for the Pennsylvania Railroad, and focused mainly on writing, including his poems in the tradition of Concrete Poetry that makes visual use of the words on the page. His experiences working on the freight trains would have a later influence on Andre's sculpture, in ordered organization, and his artistic personality - it was not uncommon for Andre to dress in overalls and a blue work shirt, even to attend formal occasions. His most well known writings were published in 1980 in a book called 12 Dialogues, in which Andre and Frampton took turns responding to one another at a typewriter using mainly poetry and free-form essay-like texts. Andre's Concrete Poetry has exhibited in the USA and Europe, a comprehensive collection of which is in the collection of the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. His first public exhibition of work was in 1965, in the 'Shape and Structure' show curated by Henry Geldzahler at the Tibor de Nagy Gallery, and in 1966 his controversial Lever was included in the important exhibition at the Jewish Museum in New York, Primary Structures. In 1970 he had a solo exhibition at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, and has had one man exhibitions and participated in group shows in major museums and galleries throughout the USA and Europe. His work features in many important collections, including the UK's Tate, which bought Equivalent VIII in 1972 and a few years later was the inspiration for much public controversy over the nature of contemporary art. He is now represented by the Paula Cooper Gallery in New York, by Sadie Coles HQ in London, and Yvon Lambert Gallery in Paris, and lives and works in New York. Alistair Rider here divides Andre's works into the major themes and series that have shaped his career's development, exploring how each has grown from Andre's philosophies and artistic growth. Allan Kaprow coined the term in 1958 to name a new collage form of performance, calling happenings "radical prototypes" of performance art. Rodenbeck offers a rigorous art historical reading of Kaprow's project and related artworks. She finds that these experiential and experimental works offered not a happy communalism but a strong and canny critique of contemporary sociality. Happenings, she argues, were far more ambivalent, negative, and even creepy than they have been portrayed, either in contemporaneous accounts or in more recent efforts to connect them to contemporary art's participatory strategies. In Radical Prototypes, Rodenbeck recovers the critical force of happenings, addressing them both as theoretical objects and as artworks, investigating broader epistemological and formal concerns as well as their material and performative aspects. She links happenings to scores by John Cage (especially 4'33"), avant-garde theater, and photography, and offers new readings of projects ranging from Kaprow's 18 Happenings in 6 Parts (1959) to Gerhard Richter's Leben mit Pop (1963). Rodenbeck casts happenings as a form of participatory art that simultaneously delivers a radical critique of that very participation--a view that revises our understanding of contemporary constructions of the participatory as well as of 1960s projects from Fluxus to conceptual art.

Brice Marden and Robert Ryman made the cut because their work was believed to be purely about the process of painting. Drawn from the Inventory: The Notebooks of Elisabeth Faulhaber Overview

Elisabeth Faulhaber was born in south west Germany in 1890. By the time she was admitted to a psychiatric hospital in Doesen near Leipzig in 1914, she had worked in a factory, been a chambermaid and a waitress, and had had a child out of wedlock. She was an inmate of the hospital for six years, dying of tuberculosis in 1921, at the age of 31. She wrote, she drew and - according to hospital notes - scribbled unstoppably on furniture, floor, walls. A handful of her drawings survive, and six small notebooks. These now form part of the Prinzhorn Collection, Heidelberg. The notebooks show Elisabeth Faulhaber to have been intelligent and questioning. She was also often muddled to an extreme. Her work is imbued with sensibility. The notebooks’ varied subject matter and range of graphic invention show a wonderful artistic talent. Sarah Jacobs’ rendition of the notebooks contains more than 550 drawings by Faulhaber but, although the rendition contains one page for every page of the notebooks, it is not a facsimile. Instead, black and white photographs of the drawings have been reversed, and then partly erased so that what is presented is both faithful to the original, and insistently the opposite. Freely translated extracts from the Faulhaber’s texts have also been included, together with a selection of the poems and songs which Faulhaber copied into her notebooks. These have been left in the original German. The rendition has been produced in association with Sammlung Prinzhorn, UniversitaetsKlinikum, Heidelberg. Sarah Jacobs is an artist living in London.

Kuo's obsessive charts, which resemble Op art, Concrete art or the abstractions of Josef Albers (sometimes in deliberate homage), have reached a wide audience through his music reviews for The New York Times, as well as through numerous solo shows over the past ten years. What Me Worry adopts Mad magazine's slogan to gently poke fun at the artist's compulsive record-keeping, and compiles a range of charts, some of which are also made into colorful sculptures, alongside figurative paintings, diary musings and a series of recipes. The New Yorker music critic Kelefa Sanneh contributes an essay.
Andrew Kuo graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Rhode Island School of Design in 1999, and now lives in New York, where his first solo exhibition was held in 2001; his most recent solo exhibition, All Over Again, was held at The 33 Bond Gallery in October, 2007. Kuo's charts of bands and concerts are regularly featured in The New York Times' music section.
